The stamp thing pisses me off. I remember full service stations... by the time I was driving there was only one in my town. Gas was a buck. I do remember having to help my mom pump gas when the self-service started. Recently I stopped for gas in Jersey... self-service gas is against the law there. Target, Home Depot, Ikea, etc. all have "self service" lines and they're generally SLOWER 'cause the people using them don't know how to work the machines.

I'm from your era, and remember at the "filling station" those black hoses stretched all the way across the filling station that would ding twice when you pulled into the station? Then the guy came out and did all the work. And there were no convenience stores at the gas stations? Just a Coke machine and a candy machine right there in the garage? People in the stores these days are not trained properly in the service part of their jobs.

It was my observation too that the "self service" line at Kmart had folks confused, and was slower. What genius came up with this idea? Service means service, not "self service". At least that's the way I see it. Thanks for commenting :)

Businesses over a certain size in CA HAVE TO provide a public restroom. So... pretty much any grocery store, warehouse business, outlet, etc. has one. Smaller businesses (occupancies serving ten (10) or fewer people) have to provide you with restroom access, but it can be the "employee bathroom." Oh, and the maximum distance from the front door, by law, is 500 feet. Problem is, it's up to local authorities to enforce this stuff, so if someone won't let you pee, you have to sue them.

I love these kinds of laws. You know, CA doesn't have a fire code stating that all public businesses have to have outward-swinging exit doors? They'll shut you down for that shit in Illinois :)

In CA, on a motorcycle, you can "split lanes" with a car. Dangerous, but they allow it because of air-cooled bikes that will overheat in traffic. Ya gotta wear a helmet though... In Illinios, you DON'T have to wear a helmet (many kids only wear shorts and flipflops), but splitting lanes is a moving violation and doing it twice in 500 yards is reckless driving.

You make a good point. They should call it service-less. It is illegal in Oregon, Gas stations are still "service stations" there... of course you pay more.

I remember when gas stations had promotions, so when you got a tank of gas they would give you a mug, a toy, calender, t-shirts etc. Also they would ALWAYS ask if you needed your oil checked. So many things have changed. What's really upsetting is health care or lack of. People don't get the care like they used to, but that's a long story. Great vid!

I remember those sorts of promotions, and I remember always being asked about checking the oil too. Health care is something that I care a great deal about. Working in a pharmacy I see a lot of people who can't afford their prescriptions or to go to the doctor, and it's very sad. It certainly needs to be addressed. They did it to preserve jobs. My cousin lives near Eugene Oregon. He says jobs are very hard to come by. They also have no sales tax in Oregon. They do, however, to make up for it have relatively high property taxes.

In many ways I like self-service, but when it comes to scanning my own items I'm so incompetent that I mess it up so badly someone has to come over and help me---which is really embarrassing.

lol, I remember when I was a kid we actually called gas stations "service stations" and when you went to get gas an "attendant" actually came out, pumped the gas, cleaned the windows, checked the oil and air in your tires! WITH A SMILE on his face, and you didn't even have to get out of your car!

I've heard something about that. And also mail order pharmacies are becoming very prevalent, which cuts into the local retail pharmacy's business. Things are changing, for sure.
